Bootstrapped

A selection of takeaways: Pulling yourself up by the bootstraps is not only impossible, but also quite a toxic myth. Also: Capitalism is (very) broken, as is the American Dream. Dependence on other people is not a problem, but very natural and actually a good thing. We have to support each other – not only on a grassroots level, but through tax-funded social safety nets, etc. Final thought: Much is broken here, but God, I'm happy I'm living in Europe and not in the US.

Bananas

Excellent, yet infuriating and depressing at times. A brief history of United Fruits (now renamed to Chiquita) and how it constantly fought against democracy and welfare in Central America and elsewhere.

Capitalist Realism
120 Seiten

"The tiniest event can tear a hole in the grey curtain of reaction which has marked the horizons of possibility under capitalist realism. From a situation in which nothing can happen, suddenly anything is possible again."

Hello World

The Internet Con

Very, very good book on why the internet is kind of broken (aka tech monopolies, walled gardens, etc) and how we can fix it (right to repair, interoperability, ...). I'm also a particular fan of the line (and sentiment behind) "How to seize the means of computation".
